Quick Answer: The best tankless water heater brands in 2026 are Rinnai (best overall gas), Navien (best with built-in recirculation), Noritz (longest warranty), Rheem and A.O. Smith (easiest to buy and service, both with 15-year heat-exchanger warranties on their condensing flagships), and for electric, EcoSmart (best value) and Stiebel Eltron (best for cold climates). The badge tells you less than you’d think: in ENERGY STAR’s certified gas-tankless list, checked October 30, 2026, just two companies, A.O. Smith and Rheem, are behind 285 of 393 US-market models (72.5%), one A.O. Smith heater is listed under six different brand names, and Rheem also owns EcoSmart.

Last updated October 30, 2026: brand ownership and efficiency checked against ENERGY STAR’s certified gas water heater database (data.energystar.gov, 393 US-market gas tankless listings) and manufacturer warranty pages. Prices come from the dated checks on each of our brand reviews.

There are more than two dozen tankless water heater brands on sale in the US, and we have a review for 27 of them. Most shoppers compare them as if each badge were a separate company with its own factory. Many aren’t. Some are sister brands sold through different channels, two are discontinued, one is a licensed name, and several are marketplace imports with one-year warranties. This guide ranks the brands worth buying, then shows who is actually behind each name, so you can tell a real choice from the same heater with a different sticker.

*Street prices are from the dated price checks on each brand review (August to October 2026) and move often. UEF figures are from ENERGY STAR's certified gas water heater list (October 30, 2026). Electric tankless heaters aren't covered by ENERGY STAR.

Who actually makes each tankless brand

ENERGY STAR’s certified product list has a column most shoppers never see: the ENERGY STAR partner, the company that submitted the model for certification. For gas tankless heaters it maps badges to companies better than any brand website does. Here is what the October 30, 2026 list shows for the 393 gas tankless models sold in the US.

Listing counts include separate natural-gas and propane versions and are not sales figures. Every certified gas tankless model on the list rates at least 0.95 UEF, so non-condensing units (Rinnai RE and V Series, Noritz NRC98, Rheem Performance Plus) aren't on it.

Same heater, different badge: the model numbers

The clearest evidence is in the model numbers. ENERGY STAR lists these units with identical input, efficiency and venting, certified on the same day by the same partner:

That doesn’t make the badges interchangeable at the checkout. The difference is in channel, price and warranty: Richmond’s tankless line is sold mainly through Menards at a lower price than Rheem’s badge, with a shorter warranty on its electric units (see our Richmond review); State is A.O. Smith’s contractor-channel brand (our State review found the GTS-540 at Menards for $699.99 against $1,874 wholesale). If two quotes name different badges with the same model-number pattern, you’re comparing installers and warranty cards, not heaters.

Bradford White is the odd case. Bradford White has been employee-owned since 1992, bought Laars in 2005 and launched its Infiniti tankless line in 2014, according to its own company timeline. But ENERGY STAR names two different partners behind its Infiniti tankless line. The older K and L Series listings (RTG-K-199, RTGL 199, certified 2023) name Bosch Thermotechnology. The newer GR and GS listings (RTGR, RTGS, certified 2025) name Kiturami, a South Korean boiler maker that also certifies the same-pattern Laars LT150/LT199 units and its own KGWH heaters. ENERGY STAR doesn’t say who assembles what, but the partner field is the company that put its name to the certification, and Bosch has since moved its own tankless line to discontinued status (our Bosch review has the details).

1. Rinnai: Best Tankless Water Heater Brand Overall

Rinnai Sensei RX199iN (condensing gas, indoor)

199,000 BTU · up to 11.1 GPM (warm inlet) · 0.98 UEF (ENERGY STAR) · 15-year residential heat-exchanger warranty (per Rinnai's owner-manual terms) · $1,530–$1,725 street (checked September 2026)
  • Rinnai's 10 US ENERGY STAR listings (Sensei RX, RXP, CX and CXP) all rate 0.97 or 0.98 UEF. No other brand's whole certified lineup sits that high.
  • The RXP199iN adds a built-in recirculation pump for about $300 more; the CX199iN is the commercial-rated twin.
  • Non-condensing RE199iN (about $1,280 at Home Depot) and the V Series cover tighter budgets, with shorter heat-exchanger warranties than the RX.
  • Rinnai, incorporated in Nagoya, Japan in 1920, certifies only its own badge, and its units are stocked at Home Depot, Lowe's and plumbing wholesalers, so parts and installers are easy to find.
  • Labor coverage is 1 year, or 5 years if you register within 90 days (rinnai.us warranty page). Rinnai also says units bought from an unauthorized dealer aren't covered, so check who the seller is.

Rinnai wins on the combination of top-tier efficiency, a fair street price and the widest service network of any import brand. The RX199iN undercuts Navien’s flagship by a few hundred dollars. Our Rinnai review decodes the RX/RE/V naming and has every model’s GPM.

2. Navien: Best Brand for Built-In Recirculation

Navien NPE-240A2 (condensing gas, built-in ComfortFlow pump)

199,900 BTU · up to 11.2 GPM at a 35°F rise · 0.95 UEF (ENERGY STAR) · 15-year heat exchanger, 5-year parts, 1-year labor (navieninc.com, residential, controlled recirculation) · $1,950–$2,099 (checked August 2026)
  • The A2 models include a recirculation pump and buffer tank, so you get hot water faster at distant taps without a separate pump.
  • The no-pump NPE-240S2 rates a slightly higher 0.96 UEF in ENERGY STAR's list than the A2 (0.95).
  • Navien is part of South Korea's KD Navien (Pyeongtaek) and certifies only its own badge. Its 6 US listings are the NPE-2 series in three sizes (150,000, 180,000 and 199,000 BTU).
  • Buy it from an installer, not a website. Navien's NPE-A2 and NPE-S2 warranty pages state that "consumer purchases through the internet or other e-commerce channels shall void Navien's warranty." The full 15-year/5-year/1-year residential term also requires at least an aquastat on any recirculation loop; uncontrolled recirculation drops it to 5 years on the heat exchanger.

If you’ve waited a minute for hot water at the far bathroom, Navien is the brand that solves it in the box. Because of the e-commerce clause, get a Navien quote from a local installer rather than ordering the heater yourself. See our Navien review for sizing, and Rinnai vs Navien for the head-to-head.

3. Noritz: Best Warranty

Noritz EZ Series (EZ98DV, EZ111DV, EZTR50 bundle)

180,000–199,000 BTU · up to 9.8 GPM (EZ98, warm inlet) · 0.98 UEF on current ENERGY STAR listings · 25-year heat-exchanger warranty in single-family, non-recirculating use · EZTR50 about $3,027 (checked August 2026)
  • Noritz's 25-year term is the longest fixed heat-exchanger warranty of any brand we cover. It drops to 15 years with preheated or recirculated water.
  • ENERGY STAR shows Noritz re-certifying its EZ and NRCR units at 0.98 UEF in 2024 and again in February 2026.
  • The EZTR50 bundles the vent kit and isolation valves; the proven NRC98-DV is a cheaper non-condensing option at 0.91 UEF.

Noritz costs more up front, and it’s mostly sold through plumbing wholesalers. If you plan to stay in the house for 20 years, it buys the most warranty per dollar. Our Noritz review compares every line, and Noritz vs Rinnai covers the matchup.

4. Rheem: Best Brand to Buy Off the Shelf

Rheem IKONIC (RTGH-S11i pro / ECOHS200iN at Home Depot)

199,000 BTU · up to 11.2 GPM (warm inlet) · 0.96 UEF (ENERGY STAR) · built-in WiFi and LeakGuard · 15-year heat-exchanger warranty incl. full-unit replacement, 5-year parts, 1-year labor (rheem.com) · $1,439.20 sale / $1,799 list at Home Depot (checked September 2026)
  • Rheem sells more tankless heaters through big-box retail than anyone, and almost every unit exists twice: a retail SKU (ECOHS, RETEX) and a pro SKU (RTGH, RTEX).
  • The same S11I platform is certified as Richmond, Ruud and Friedrich, so service parts are widely stocked.
  • For electric, the 24 kW RTEX-24 (about $549 at Home Depot) is Rheem's whole-home warm-climate pick.

Rheem’s own product pages now list a 15-year heat-exchanger warranty that includes full-unit replacement on the IKONIC and Performance Platinum, so the old knock on Rheem’s warranty no longer holds for its condensing units; check the term for your exact model, because Rheem notes that coverage varies by model. Our Rheem review decodes the retail-vs-pro naming, and Rinnai vs Rheem settles the most common two-brand question.

5. A.O. Smith: Best for Hard Water

A.O. Smith Adapt+ ATHR-199X3 (condensing gas, X3 Scale Prevention)

199,000 BTU · 10.5 GPM · 0.95 UEF · X3 Scale Prevention · 15-year heat exchanger, 5-year parts (hotwater.com, residential) · $2,187.90 at SupplyHouse (checked August 2026)
  • A.O. Smith rates X3 Scale Prevention as extending heat-exchanger life by up to 300% in hard water.
  • The ProLine XE ATI-540H-N gives up X3 for roughly half the price ($1,092.32 at Ferguson in August 2026).
  • Because the same platforms are sold as State, American, Lochinvar and Reliance, nearly any plumbing wholesaler can service one.

A.O. Smith’s whole certified lineup sits at the 0.95 UEF floor, so it’s not the efficiency leader. It’s the safest pick if hard water is your problem and you want a brand every supply house carries. Details are in our A.O. Smith review.

6. EcoSmart: Best Value Electric Brand

EcoSmart ECO 27 (27 kW electric, self-modulating)

27 kW · 240V · 2.7–6.5 GPM depending on inlet temperature · limited lifetime warranty when registered in the US or Canada · $549–$619 (checked October 2026)
  • Copper-and-brass heating chambers, field-replaceable elements and self-modulating power that draws only what the flow needs.
  • EcoSmart's low GPM figure is your cold-winter number; the high figure assumes warm inlet water.
  • The ECO 36 (3.6–8.7 GPM) is the cold-climate step up; the ECO 11 covers a single fixture on one 60A breaker.

No other electric brand matches a lifetime warranty at this price. EcoSmart is a Rheem brand, which helps explain why its parts are easy to get. Size it by your panel’s amperage first: our EcoSmart review and electrical requirements guide show how.

7. Stiebel Eltron: Best Electric Brand for Cold Climates

Stiebel Eltron Tempra 24 Plus (24 kW electric)

24 kW · up to 4.68 GPM (warm inlet) · Advanced Flow Control · 7-year leakage warranty, 3-year parts · $671–$698 at Home Depot (checked October 2026)
  • German-built, and the Plus models' Advanced Flow Control slows the flow slightly instead of letting the water go lukewarm when demand exceeds capacity.
  • Stiebel's own sizing recommends the Tempra 24 Plus for Northern-US and Canadian homes where inlet water drops below 45°F; the Tempra 36 Plus (up to 7.03 GPM, about 150A service) covers bigger homes.

Stiebel’s warranty is shorter than EcoSmart’s on paper, but its flow control is the better match for a cold-inlet house. Our Stiebel Eltron review sizes every model.

Brands to think twice about in 2026

BrandStatus in 2026What it means for you
TakagiRetailer notices (SupplyHouse) say the brand was discontinued as of December 31, 2025; A.O. Smith has owned Takagi's North American business since 2010Only buy at a real closeout price. ENERGY STAR still lists 16 Takagi models, all certified by A.O. Smith, and takagi.com is still online; the in-production equivalent is A.O. Smith's own Adapt+.
BoschGas and electric tankless lines filed under discontinued productsCloseout stock only. ENERGY STAR still lists 6 Bosch T9800/T9900 models; buy an in-production brand unless the discount is large.
WestinghouseLicensed name on two unrelated product linesThe electric Apolo units and the gas condensing line come from different licensees. Judge each by its own warranty card.
GEGE Appliances has been owned by Haier since 2016A real, current electric lineup; just not the original General Electric.
VEVOR, Camplux, MareyMarketplace import brandsCheap and fine for a cabin or a warm-climate sink, but VEVOR's policy page gives 12 months of warranty against 15 years or more on Rinnai, Navien and Noritz heat exchangers.

The remaining brands we’ve reviewed fill niches rather than compete for the whole-home slot: Eemax (Rheem’s electric sister brand), Chronomite (commercial point-of-use), Titan (budget electric by Niagara Industries), Atmor, Eccotemp, Midea, Fogatti, Bradford White (trade-only), and the RV specialists Girard and PrecisionTemp.

How to choose between tankless brands

The bottom line

The tankless market has fewer real manufacturers than badges. Rinnai is the best overall brand for gas, with the highest-rated certified lineup and a fair price on the RX199iN. Navien is the pick if you want recirculation in the box, Noritz if you want the longest warranty, and Rheem or A.O. Smith if you want the easiest parts and installer network. For electric, buy EcoSmart for value or Stiebel Eltron for a cold climate. Before you compare two quotes, check whether the brands on them are the same company: ENERGY STAR’s list shows that is often the case.
